What is Astrology?

Astrology is an ancient and complex study that involves planetary movements and how they affect us here on Earth. Although it was a forgotten and even vilified art, swept under the carpet for millennia, elements of it stayed alive through the years such as in Farmers Almanacs which are based on the astrological concept of using the celestial bodies for guidance on Earth.

There are many different versions of Astrology worldwide; from Hellenistic, to Vedic, to Egyptian, to the Western system, commonly known as the Tropical Zodiak. Almost every ancient culture we know of had a way of tracking time by the skies and using it in their daily lives to interpret incoming or shifting energy. The Mayans used a stunningly accurate system of timekeeping based on astronomical observances that is still in use today. The Mayans, by today’s standards are considered exceptional astronomers and their timekeeping system is known by many as excellent! They timed their spiritual ceremonies, festivals and agricultural events, such as planting and harvesting crops by this system. Guidance from the stars was such an integral way of life for them that a child was given a name based on the actual day of their birth in alignment with the stars.

Astrology is considered by many to be a science, exact and precise at that. Astrology is considered by many to be a pseudoscience. Both of those statements are true. Although Astrology is considered a pseudoscience by many, once in our not so distant past all physicians had to be astrologers and astronomers first. This in itself speaks volumes to how much the stars influence, affect and guide us.

“A physician without the knowledge of astrology has no right to call him/herself a physician.”

Hippocrates, The Father of Modern Medicine

Whether we know it or not everything in existence has a natal or birth chart, also called a horoscope. And whether or we know it or not the universe is in constant dialogue with us and planetary motions are affecting our lives for better or for worse. The brilliance of astrology is that it puts an actual tool in our hands to be able to decode the messages from the Universe in order to deepen our awareness of our own selves and our place in the ever-expanding cosmos. It helps us prepare for good times, shows us how to capitalize on fortuitous periods as well as helping us to navigate challenging energies and times.

  2. Great article! It’s the truth: astrology has been around for millennia. Much longer than sun-sign horoscopes, and way more accurate! I love that quote by Hippocrates. Maybe it should be added to his oath!!

Interesting point you make about astrology being both a precise science and a pseudoscience, especially when you look into the etymology of the Greek root *psu, meaning wind or idle talk… Speaks to the placement of astrology being an occult art, I think. Not a negative thing!

Thanks for sharing, this was wonderful to read 🙂
